The International Legal Technology Association’s annual convention kicked off today with over 3,500 people, including ILTA law firm members, consultants and vendors in Nashville.
Among the 39 educational sessions held today, one discussed the use of TAR, or machine learning algorithms, to automatically classify emails for Information Governance and Knowledge Management. Four vendors, known for their TAR implementations in the e-discovery world, presented different approaches using the same underlying technology to manage the mess we call email.
One method presented was to examine the various properties of an email (sender, recipient, subject line, etc.), and certain entities contained within the email body, such as the signature block. Another approach suggested that only the email body need be examined, but with a system that understands natural language in context. Two other vendors discussed machine learning approaches, where humans train the system to classify emails.
Given the different approaches, the application of TAR to email management is clearly still in its infancy. However, one thing is evident – advanced technology will eventually solve the email management dilemma facing all organizations.
