On October 30th, LinkedIn reported (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/article/20141030202506-4684934-to-our-10-million-canadian-members) that it had just signed up its 10 millionth Canadian account holder. According to StatsCan, the Canadian population is currently at 35,540,400, which means almost 1 in 3 Canadians are on LinkedIn.
Social networking has penetrated every facet of our lives. “Facebook” has almost become as well known a trademark as “Kleenex” and receiving a LinkedIn connection request is commonplace. If you try to describe the sound a bird makes, you need to use some other word than “tweet”, because that is already taken by Twitter.
It seems from these announcements that Canadians see social media as a business tool as well as a personal tool. LinkedIn, as well as other social media sites, are accumulating more and more business related records. How an organization manages this information is important to how it responds to regulatory and litigation matters. Does your organization’s information management plan include social media?
